Trash Talking

Alright, this has bothered me for a while.
I for one don't mind the occasional friendly joshing but the hostility is out of hand.
I enjoy playing this game and even in defeat I can sometimes find myself laughing at a close call or whatever, but then people explode the chat with such vitriol, which is entirely unnecessary and really ruins the fun. Some teasing can be good natured and even motivational but the directed insults I see in the lobby are just immature.

This is a problem. If a new person were to come into the lobby and see all this hate, they would probably run away and delete the game and never look back.. I think everyone needs to come to an agreement to show some basic respect and civility. You won't see me taking part.

I totally agree. This is definitely an issue. We need to foster a good friendly community if we plan to have more people discovering this game. I understand the game can get intense and exciting but we're all grownups here and should be able to control ourselves.

A good example is John Romero, one of the creators of DOOM, use to trash talk very often in the 90's. While it was fun at first, it got out of hand and there was a huge community backlash.

So the question now is, how do we resolve this? Do we really need a moderator? I'd hate to see anyone kicked. We don't have many players to begin with. But if we don't, are people going to even bother playing with so much hatred going on?

As others have said, I also thought this was a problem from the very start. If I didn't already like the game I would have never came back right when I saw all the trash talking going on. I almost didn't play at all because I saw a lot of stuff happening on facebook before I had time to actually play a game...

We're a very small community and if we start off with this sort of mindset we'll scare away most people, and only the few who really enjoy trash talking will stick around making the problem even worse.

I really hope (and don't think) we need a moderator at this stage

I agree cetain people start talking crap and then they get upset when it comes back to them, I think there should be no issues if they keep quiet. Happy Hacking!

I don't think using an ingame power to kick people or ban people is the right response. We are already a small community and there are ways around any kind of ban.
If we were going to implement any kind of SW solution, the old silencer curse filter comes to mind.. that would put a stop to some of the CABOOSE-holes.
And sometimes a few teases are in order. If I fumble a secret, I know I deserve some snarky comments. The amount I have seen, though, is way overkill. This is just a call to everyone, to just be mindful of things. I hope discussing this in the open is all that is needed to reign things in.
At the end of the day we all go wayyy back and we are all friends. No sense in pissing people off over a game.

Since this thread, I've noticed a MUCH friendlier tone and I really love it. I've only seen light and fun trash talking. Let's keep this up <3
